Understanding Your Belief System

Understanding the beliefs you have about the world and how they shape your attitudes and behavior is essential if you want to ultimately rewrite them. Taking some time to reflect on and unpick your beliefs can help you gain insight into why you think and behave in certain ways, and also allow you to challenge and reconstruct any beliefs that no longer serve you. Let’s take a look at some of the key elements to be aware of when understanding your belief system.

Identify your current beliefs

Identifying your current beliefs is the first important step when exploring and re-assessing your belief system. Uncovering the different beliefs you possess creates an opportunity to reflect on their truth and relevancy. Start by making a list of the different positive and negative beliefs that you hold about yourself and aspects of life. Once your list is complete, write down how each belief makes you feel, as well as whether you view it as true or not. It can also be useful to consider why each belief could be considered valid and where it may be inaccurate or out of date.

Perception: What stories are you telling yourself about yourself – whether out loud or silently inwards – that may be holding you back from creating a better future? By becoming aware of patterns in how we see ourselves can help us unlearn limiting belief systems or narrow mindsets – allowing us space to try new approaches or attach ourselves to other positive mindsets that better serve us.
